Under a project jointly commissioned by the Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment (SPREP) and the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation in the Pacific Islands, TierraMar led an extensive regional process to develop the Pacific Framework for Nature Conservation and Protected Areas 2014-2020. This required a comprehensive review of the 2008 – 2012 regional Action Strategy for Nature Conservation and Protected Areas. The review informed the development of the regional Framework for Nature Conservation and Protected Areas 2014-2020.

The Framework provides guidance to Pacific Island countries are territories (PICTs), regional organisations, NGOs, the international donor community and partners on achieving the global 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity. It focuses on the fundamental roles that biodiversity and healthy ecosystems play in providing food security to Pacific Islanders and resilience to the impacts of climate change. It reinforces the critical role of stakeholders including government, local communities and development partners.

The principles outlined in the Framework formed a code of conduct for nature conservation in the Pacific:

Principle 1: Community Rights

Principle 2: Conservation from a Pacific Perspective

Principle 3: Ownership of Conservation Programmes

Principle 4: Financial Sustainabiltiy

Principle 5: Good Governance

Principle 6: Coordination and Collaboration

Principle 7: Capacity Development

Principle 8: Accountability

Principle 9: Reinforcing Resilience and Sustainability

It also provides conservation practitioners with guidance on recognised best practices for conservation in the region and was adopted at the 9th Pacific Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas in the Pacific held in Suva Fiji, December 2013.
